Groove Garden provides expertise in two services, Music Supervision and Negotiations and Licensing. We charge a competitive flat, predetermined fee for each service.

Music Supervision: Working with your creative direction, budget and timeline, we handcraft playlists of music for your project. As a completely independent company, we can work with anyone to find you the perfect track (or create one, or remix… we think outside the box!) We pride ourselves on our eclectic tastes and extensive contacts throughout the music world. Our expertise is in finding different and effective musical ways to convey a message, essence or mood.

Licensing: Whether you’re pursuing an unreleased song from a French band, a huge pop song currently all over the radio, or a selection of composers to create something original, our treasured and ever-expanding relationships within the industry secure you the best negotiations and easy licensing.

We’ll get you all the legal documents to secure your use and follow up on paperwork until all t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted.

Intellectual Property Research, Negotiation & Licensing

We can locate video footage, images, sound bytes, etc, available for licensing, including pricing information. We will track down the owners of the Intellectual Property and negotiate prices & availability on your behalf.

Talent Research, Negotiation & Licensing

For advertising campaigns, public appearances, and / or brand partnerships, we provide detailed lists of talent / celebs just right for your project, including pricing information. With our management and agency contacts, we negotiate prices & availability on your behalf.

SGINNED (aka Caroline Polachek of Chairlift and Jorge Elbrecht of Violens and Lansing-Dreiden) replaced the music and lyrics for Justin Bieber’s “Never Let You Go” video… and I might have never noticed save for the fact that it thoroughly defied my expectations of what Justin Beiber’s music might sound like (of which I still don’t know).

I’m going to throw out some terms here, so prepare yourself. Independently made music without a major label or distributor, also know as “indie music,” was really thriving in the 90′s. Popular among these indie artists from the 90′s was a low fidelity recording style, also known as “lo-fi,” which implemented rudimentary recording devices and production techniques in order to immediately create music. The lo-fi movement produced intimate, inventive, and new-but-nostalgic sounds from basements and bedrooms across the US and beyond.

As Kurt and I are of similar age, I imagine he probably experienced all this great lo-fi indie music first hand in his formative high school years. I can hear influences from early Guided by Voices, Dinosaur Jr, and even Beck’s K Records folk moment One Foot In The Grave. Like the works of the aforementioned artists, Kurt Vile has a talent for wandering melodies, lots of mood, and a sound that is extremely intimate. Intimate, like you’re in a reverb-y jail cell on your 20th year with your cell-mate.

You can hear all the classic rock that informed indie rock here, but Vile especially recalls the less flashy lead guitar men, like Neil Young and Tom Petty. In those mid 90′s high school years, while listening to lo-fi independent greats, I bet Kurt was (as I was), cramming to catch up on about 30 years of classic rock. It was all happening at the same time for some of my peers. Those grungy high school daze, it’s exactly what I’m reminded of when I hear Kurt Vile’s music. Could he be the guitar and song man of my generation?

Tiny Furniture at SXSW

If you’re going to SXSW this month, make sure to catch the world premiere of
Tiny Furniture featured in SXSW’s Narative Film Competition.

Directed by Groove Garden pal Lena Dunham, the film is a hilarious and spot on account of female coming-of-age (and regression) after undergrad. Groove Garden helped out with music supervision, and the film features amazing original tracks by the human hit machine Teddy Blanks.

It’s in their water and their akvavit.

A few weeks before Taylor Swift swept up at the Grammys, Sweden held their freak-flag waving version of music’s biggest night, the P3 Guld. Besides Fever Ray’s face melting off, this slightly more appetizing display also happened.

“Copyright Criminals” on PBS

The show Independent Lens on PBS has a new episode all about sampling and copyright laws. It’s called Copyright Criminals.

It’s available to watch online until February 9th, watch it here.

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression,
copyright law and money.

Not only does the film chronicle and discuss sampling and the rise of the remix, it also provides first-person interviews with artists on all sides of the issue. I was expecting Public Enemy’s production team The Bomb Squad and the Beastie Boy’s heavily sampled album “Paul’s Boutique” to be discussed. I did not expect interviews with Clyde Stubblefield — James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most sampled musician, or hear producer Steve Albini talk such decisive trash about sampling. I also wouldn’t have guessed Maggie Gyllenhaal would narrate it.

Groove Garden’s movie critic team gives it 2 thumbs up!
